Video poker strategy: choosing pay tables and avoiding common errors

Video poker rewards disciplined decision-making more than most casino games, because your long-term return is set largely by the pay table and only then by how accurately you play. Start every session by identifying the exact variant and its payouts, not the graphics or side features. A small change in full house or flush payouts can swing expected value by more than any “lucky streak”. If you want a simple benchmark, prioritise versions with higher returns and clear rules, and treat any game with reduced payouts as entertainment rather than a serious grind.

The most practical skill is pay-table selection. In Jacks or Better, look for 9/6 (9 for a full house, 6 for a flush) as a strong baseline; in Deuces Wild, seek full-pay schedules with generous straight and flush values. Avoid common errors: playing the first machine you see, ignoring whether the game is “bonus” or “double bonus”, and chasing progressive jackpots while accepting a poor base table. Also, do not overvalue low pairs or suited junk; correct strategy usually means holding high cards, made hands, and strong draws, even when it feels counterintuitive. If you need a quick reminder, keep a strategy card and practise away from the casino floor.

For mindset and method, many players credit the analytical approach popularised by gambling author and mathematician Michael Shackleford, known as the Wizard of Odds; his focus on expected value and rule scrutiny helps players avoid emotional holds and “near-miss” bias.
